Storm at Sea
This painting was from two photographs. The two central figures are from Jetty Park straight east from Orlando where we lived. They are JoAnn, my wife, talking to Matthew, my son. The pier is at Matanzas State Park. At the time there was a hurricane out in the ocean. I saw the huge waves smash into the end of the pier and splash way up onto the walkway. Those waves were very violent, but by the time they made it to the beach they were tamed into gliding sheets of water. After painting it I continue to see meanings, but the thoughts that have stuck with me are the struts on the left and overhead offering protection like great strong arms. I see the green waves as symbols of evil tamed by the strength of the pier so that two people can talk quietly all oblivious to the violence just a few yards away. I see the protection of God on our lives.
